Dear Families and Childcarers,
Self Employment for Childcarers
There is a widely held belief that a nanny, for example, is unable to register as 'Self Employed'.
Although most nannies are not self-employed there is no reason why a nanny should not obtain 'self employed status'.
It is a matter of speaking to the Inland Revenue and convincing them that the nature of the work is such that 'self employed' status is beneficial
and easier to manage to not only the nanny, but also the family who employ her. The case will be strengthened if the nanny works for more than one
family which is often the case, or the nanny also does other work to supplement her income.
There are definite benefits for families because they then do not need to get involved in calculating and paying Tax and NI for a part-time employee.
The family simply pays the nanny the equivalent extra amout of money, and the nanny pays her own Tax and NI.

What is SureStart?
"Sure Start is the government programme to deliver the best start in life for every child. We bring together, early education, childcare, health and family support."
There are SureStart centres all over the Country where working parents can leave their children for typically 12 hours a week or more depending on what they can afford,
and the families level of funding from the Government. Because the childcare is Government subsidised SureStart provides cheaper access to childcare than what is available through
engaging a nanny, childminder, or use of a private nursery school.
Grants are also available, e.g. Maternity Grants
