November

v Frosts
can strike in November so make sure you have some horticultural fleece handy to
throw over tender shrubs.
v Apply manure and dig over
heavy soil in the Autumn. Don't worry about breaking down large lumps of soil
as the Winter frost should break these down.

v
Spike lawn and give it an autumn feed.
v November is a good time of
year to plant new hedges. You'll see bundles of bare-rooted hedging plants in
garden centres now. Prepare your site well, digging on lots of organic matter
such as homemade compost or a good manure before you plant.
v Lift cannas and lay them in
trays of used compost, keeping them damp and away from frost.
v Where diseases are a problem
on roses, collect up all the fallen leaves you can find and burn them. Pick off
any remaining few on the plants too.
November is a good month for planting or moving roses, too. Cut them well
back to stop wind-rock and to encourage strong new growth next year.
v Get your tulips in this month.
Plant them 6-7 inches deep and they will go on for years.
v
Continue to clear leaves and compost them.
v
Established fruit trees can be winter-pruned this
month.
