May’s Gardening tips for the UK

Cotton Rope Hammocks - Single Weave Standard Size

1.      Keep weeds under control; the warm wet weather will encourage rapid growth.

2.      Protect fruit blossom from late frosts/ Protect plants (especially young) from snails and slug by using slug pellets, course grit or traps. Alternatively try to encourage birds, hedgehogs and frogs into your garden – all prey on slugs and snails.

3.      Tie in climbing and rambling roses and plant climbers.

4.      Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds. Thin out seedlings, leaving only the strongest growing plants.

5.      Start to feed citrus plants.

6.      Increase the water given to houseplants.

7.      Feed hungry shrubs and roses.

8.      Sow new lawns or repair bare patches, start cutting lawns weekly. Apply weed and feed to established lawns.

9.      Prune fig trees.

10.  Divide bamboos and water lilies.

11.  Plant pond and wetland plants, especially oxygenators.

12.  Remove the dead heads of all flowering bulbs this will encourage the plant to store energy in the bulb rather than wasting it on seed production.
